President Yudhoyono Sides with Farmers

“Their (the protesters) aspirations are in line with the government’s program"

Thousands of protesters marched yesterday in a protest to demand justice on the issue of the acquisition of people’s land by force. The demonstration was aimed at protesting against government’s policies regarding agrarian conflicts.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono responded positively on the issue. Yudhoyono called for all parties to strive for these aspirations.

“Their (the protesters) aspirations are in line with the government’s program regarding agrarian reform, which is intended to reduce poverty and income inequality, to lower unemployment rate, to solve many disputes and conflicts, to open economic access, to ensure legal certainty and to strengthen people’s rights,” said Presidential adviser, Andi Arief, on Jan 12.

Andi Arief then explained that last year the government had distributed 1,000 hectares of land to farmers in 10 villages in Jasinga District in Bogor.

Moreover, Andi said that the President has instructed ministries and institutions to study more about technical items regarding rights on land use. “We really hoped for people’s participation through data and information supports,” he said.
